Alquerías and the cultivation of tigernuts in l’Horta d’Alboraia

An alquería is a kind of house in the farmlands that is completely different from a barraca. The Alboraia farmlands are rich in alquerías, the most notable ones being the Alquerías de Requení, Sant Andreu or “El Retoret” and Les Palmeres.

The oldest alquerías face south and have their entrance marked with an arch. Many alquerías have a tower that served as a lookout and some had a small oratory or chapel for private worship. These chapels could be part of the same building or be a freestanding building, and were considered a symbol of distinction.

The cultivation of tigernuts. In summer, you can see the fields of tigernuts at its peak, covering the farmlands with an intense green hue. When caressed by the wind, the long leaves of the plant evoke a grass-green sea. Tigernuts are small growths that form at the end of the plant's roots and from them a delicious juice known as "horchata" is extracted. Sandy soils, abundant water and a mild climate make Alboraya an ideal place for growing this tuber. The Valencia Tigernut Designation of Origin was recognized in 1999 by the European Union.
