The Parish Church Of Our Lady Of The Assumption

(Calle Abadía, 2.)

Standing majestically in the heart of Alboraya’s historic center, the town’s parish church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, a Virgin for whom King Jaime I held deep devotion. In fact, he often invoked her name and expressed gratitude for the reconquest of lands occupied by the Moors in Valencia.

Dating back to the 18th century, the church’s main altar is adorned with a sculpture of the Assumption, flanked by statues of the apostles Peter and Paul. Interestingly, this altar is the newest addition to the church, built just five years ago, making it paradoxically the youngest among all its elements.

Inside, the church houses two chapels. The first is dedicated to the Miracle of the Little Fish, where the ark and the ciborium are preserved - objects that, according to tradition, were carried by the priest when the miracle occurred on the banks of the Carraixet ravine. The second chapel, devoted to the Blessed Sacrament, contains several original paintings by Valencian artist and Alboraya native, José Peris Aragó, and his son, Peris Panach, presided over by a carving of the Immaculate Conception.

The artistic richness of the church is displayed throughout its many altars, where various saints and Marian devotions are venerated. On the left side of the central nave or aisle, the altars are dedicated to Our Lady of the Forsaken (patroness of Valencia), Saint Nicholas, Saint Michael, the Blessed of Alboraya (Domingo and Amparo of Alboraya), Saint Joseph, and Our Lady of the Pillar. At the central nave’s transept, stands an altar dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On the right side of the central nave, we find altars for Saint Roch and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Our Lady of August and Saint Christopher, and Saint Francis of Assisi. In the right transept, next to the main altar, are the Holy Christ of Providence and the Recumbent Christ.

On December 3, 1939, the new bells arrived and were given the following names:

The largest: Maria Assumta The second: Cristóbal The third: Cristo de la Providencia The fourth: Miracle dels Peixets The fifth: San Pedro
