Ermita dels Peixets

(Camí Sèquia de la Mosquera, 2)

On the shores of the sea, on the right bank of the Carraixet ravine, stands this small maritime chapel dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament. Its purpose is to commemorate El Milagro dels Peixets, a miracle said to have occurred in 1348 at this very spot.

The chapel, built in 1901, has a rectangular floor plan and a Neo-Gothic style. Its façade is vertically divided into three sections, with the central one being the widest. These sections are separated by buttresses topped with purely decorative pinnacles. The central section also houses the entrance, with a pointed arch doorway whose zinc-plated doors feature figures alluding to the miracle. Above the entrance, ceramic lettering reads Ermita del Milagro - Año 1907. Above the main door, there is a pointed arch recess resting on a small overhang, while the side sections feature Gothic-style windows at mid-height.

Inside, the chapel is covered by a pointed barrel vault made of brick. At the rear, a high choir loft can be accessed via a spiral staircase. The presbytery, flanked by a metal railing, has two steps leading up to the main altar, which is made of marble and supported by two columns. A tile altarpiece, depicting the miracle, is affixed to the back wall. Above, a circular window lets in natural light. The sacristy is accessed through pointed doors on either side of the altar. The exterior roof has a gabled design.

Next to the chapel is the Fuente dels Peixets, a fountain built in 1959. The surrounding area was once a lively recreational spot. Until a few years ago, the merendero dels Peixets was a popular picnic area where visitors could enjoy appetizers under its rustic shelter. Also part of the chapel's landscape were the fishermen’s cottages, from which they patiently waited for a good catch.

Every year on Pentecost Monday, the people of Alboraia celebrate El Miracle dels Peixets with a pilgrimage from the town to the chapel, followed by a communal meal. Since the chapel remains open all day, it is an excellent opportunity to visit.
